DiscoverEU 2026: 40,000 free rail passes for 18-year-olds

DiscoverEU 2026 hands 40,000 free rail passes to 18-year-olds to explore Europe by train from 1 July. See who qualifies and how the travel pass works.

Short answer: the DiscoverEU free rail pass is a European Union scheme that gives around 40,000 young people a free train pass to explore Europe. If you were selected in the spring 2026 round, you can travel for up to 7 days within one month, anytime between 1 July 2026 and 30 September 2027, plus a discount card for accommodation, culture and food.

Summer 2026 marks the moment the newest wave of DiscoverEU travellers can finally hit the rails. The DiscoverEU free rail pass, run by the European Commission as part of the Erasmus+ programme, is one of the most generous youth-travel offers in Europe — a free train pass that turns the continent's rail network into your playground for a month. The 2026 travel window opened on 1 July, so tens of thousands of 18-year-olds are now planning their routes.

What the DiscoverEU free rail pass includes

DiscoverEU is not a cash grant — it is a travel pass plus perks:

  • A rail pass valid for up to 7 travel days spread across a period of one month of your choosing.
  • A DiscoverEU discount card unlocking savings on accommodation, culture, sports, local transport and food across participating countries.
  • The freedom to travel solo or with up to four friends, if they meet the criteria and you applied together, by sharing your successful application code.
  • Extra support for participants with a disability, a health condition, or from a lower socio-economic background, through the DiscoverEU Inclusion Action.

For the spring 2026 round, the European Commission and the EACEA agency planned to award around 40,000 travel passes. The pass covers the most environmentally friendly transport — trains in the vast majority of cases, with buses or ferries only where rail is not practical (for example, to reach islands).

Who qualifies for the 2026 DiscoverEU pass

Eligibility is tightly defined. To apply for the spring 2026 round you had to:

  • Be 18 years old — specifically, born between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2008.
  • Be a resident of an EU member state or a country associated with Erasmus+, including Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Türkiye.
  • Submit your application during the window, which ran from 8 to 22 April 2026.

Applicants received an email telling them whether they had won a travel pass or been placed on a reserve list. If that is you, the travel period is now open — and the clock runs until 30 September 2027, so there is no need to rush your departure.

How the travel pass works: 7 days across one month

Trains at Budapest's historic Keleti railway station, a hub for young interrail travellers in Central Europe

The mechanics reward planning. You pick a continuous one-month slot inside the 1 July 2026 – 30 September 2027 window, and within it you get 7 days of train travel. On each travel day you can hop as many trains as you like, so a single day can cover several legs — for example Vienna to Budapest, then onward to Belgrade.

Because high-speed and night trains often require seat reservations on top of the pass, it pays to book those early, especially in July and August. A DiscoverEU pass gets you on board, but a reservation guarantees your seat on the busiest routes.

Planning your DiscoverEU trip across Europe

A free pass covers the train, but not every leg of a real trip — think airport transfers, late-night arrivals, or a city not on the rail map. That is where comparing modes helps. You can compare trains, buses, carpooling and flights on Gopaxo to fill the gaps the pass does not, or to reach your starting city cheaply before day one.

A few ideas to get the most from your 7 days:

  • Cluster nearby capitals. Central Europe packs Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Prague within short hops — ideal for using single travel days efficiently.
  • Use night trains to save both a hotel night and a travel day. Europe's overnight network has expanded fast, as we cover in our guide to the comeback of night trains.
  • Mix in buses and carpooling for regions with thin rail coverage; our tips on finding cheap train tickets in Europe apply to reservations and add-on legs too.

What if you missed out? Other cheap ways to travel

Not selected, or over 18? You still have strong options. National youth schemes are often excellent value — Spain's summer programme, for instance, slashes fares dramatically, as we explain in our piece on Verano Joven 2026. Interrail passes are open to all ages and regularly go on sale, and point-to-point tickets booked early can undercut a pass entirely on a fixed itinerary. The key is to compare before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

Is the DiscoverEU rail pass really free?

Yes. Selected applicants receive the travel pass and a discount card at no cost. You still pay for extras such as seat reservations on some high-speed and night trains, accommodation, and food, though the discount card reduces many of those.

When can I travel with my 2026 DiscoverEU pass?

You can travel for up to 7 days within a one-month period of your choosing, anytime between 1 July 2026 and 30 September 2027. You do not have to travel immediately after being selected.

Which countries can I visit with DiscoverEU?

You can travel across EU member states and countries associated with the Erasmus+ programme, including Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Türkiye.

Can I travel with friends on a DiscoverEU pass?

Yes. You can travel alone or with a group of up to four friends, provided they meet the eligibility criteria and you submitted the application together, then share your successful application code.

What if I wasn't selected for DiscoverEU?

You can still travel affordably. Look at national youth fare schemes, Interrail passes (open to all ages), or early-booked point-to-point tickets. A search on Gopaxo compares trains, buses, carpooling and flights so you always see the cheapest option.

Your free month of European rail is waiting — plan the routes, book those reservations early, and compare every leg before you go.
