Reselling a train ticket: how-to guide

An unused train ticket is never lost, as long as there is a way to transfer, exchange or refund it. This Gopaxo guide compares the three options based on the ticket type (TGV INOUI, OUIGO, Eurostar, Intercités, TER) and your time before departure.

Option 1 — Exchange the ticket

On SNCF Connect, TGV INOUI Liberté and Intercités Flex tickets can be exchanged free of charge until departure, Standard tickets for a fee of €5 to €15, and Prem's tickets cannot be exchanged. Eurostar offers free exchanges up to 7 days before departure for Plus and Premier tickets. OUIGO allows exchanges up to 30 minutes before departure for €10 to €15.

Option 2 — Request a refund

Flexible tickets are fully refundable until departure. Standard tickets (TGV INOUI) are refundable with a €5 to €15 fee up to 6 days before departure, then 50% between 3 days and 30 minutes before. Prem's, OUIGO and non-exchangeable tickets are never refunded in cash.

See also the changes and refunds section for the detailed procedure per partner.

Option 3 — Peer-to-peer resale

The resale of a named ticket is tolerated by SNCF provided the traveller's name can be changed on the ticket (which is the case for most TGV INOUI and Intercités fares, but not for OUIGO). Several specialised platforms exist (Trocdestrains, KelBillet, ZPassMyTrain, dedicated Facebook groups). The price must be lower than or equal to the purchase price under penalty of sanctions.

Eurostar and OUIGO explicitly forbid resale because the name cannot be changed on the ticket.

Our advice

  • Act as early as possible — the closer you are to departure, the less attractive your options become.
  • Favour exchange over resale when conditions allow (simpler, zero risk of fraud).
  • For non-exchangeable OUIGO tickets, activate the AXA OUIGO insurance at purchase: it refunds up to 90% of the price in the event of an unforeseen issue.

Most frequent questions about Gopaxo

Can you resell a OUIGO ticket?

No. OUIGO forbids peer-to-peer resale because the traveller's name is printed on the ticket and cannot be changed after purchase. The only option in case of an unforeseen issue is the AXA insurance offered at booking.

Is it legal to resell an SNCF ticket?

Yes, provided you do not exceed the purchase price (article L.442-3 of the French Commercial Code forbids resale at a marked-up price) and that the traveller's name can be changed on the ticket. Most TGV INOUI Liberté and Standard fares allow it; OUIGO and Eurostar do not.
