Building a multimodal itinerary in Europe

Building the right itinerary is about balancing duration, price, comfort and carbon footprint. Gopaxo aggregates in a single search the trains, buses, carpools and flights available so you can pick the most relevant combination — sometimes a flight + final bus easily beats a direct train.

Four principles for a good itinerary

  1. Define your priority constraint: price, time, comfort or ecology. Each one points to a different dominant mode.
  2. Always compare every mode. A Paris–Marseille can be faster by TGV than the low-cost flight + airport shuttle combo.
  3. Check connections. A short connection cuts total duration but raises the risk of missing the next leg. Allow at least 20 minutes' margin between two legs.
  4. Think about the first and last mile. A cheap flight to a secondary airport can become expensive once you factor in the shuttle time and cost.

The right tools

Gopaxo already provides the multimodal search. For longer European trips (several days, several countries), complement with an Interrail / Eurail pass for free-flow travel, and check Rome2Rio to identify side options (ferries, small unlisted regional carriers).

A few classic combinations

  • Paris → Porto: low-cost flight Paris Beauvais / Orly → Porto, then metro from the airport.
  • Paris → Berlin: direct flight, or ÖBB Nightjet night train Paris–Berlin to sleep during the journey.
  • Paris → Rome: TGV Paris–Milan (Frecciarossa or Trenitalia), then Frecciarossa Milan–Rome.
  • Paris → Amsterdam: direct Eurostar 3 h 19.
  • Lyon → Madrid: TGV Lyon–Barcelona then Renfe AVE / AVLO Barcelona–Madrid.

Practical advice

Keep your booking confirmations on your phone (plus a backup PDF), download station and airport maps before leaving, and book your next train ticket as early as possible to take advantage of low fares (see SNCF timetables).

Most frequent questions about Gopaxo

What is the best tool to plan a multimodal itinerary in Europe?

Gopaxo aggregates trains, buses, flights and carpools in a single search across more than 400 operators. For passes covering several days or several countries, Interrail and Eurail remain unrivalled. Rome2Rio is useful as a complement to identify niche options (ferries, small regional carriers).

How much margin should you leave between two legs of a journey?

At least 20 minutes between two trains in the same station, 45 to 60 minutes if you change station, and 2 to 3 hours between a flight and a connection by train or bus, to absorb any delay or queueing time at the airport.
