Italo, operated by NTV (Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori), is continental Europe's first private high-speed rail operator. Its Italo AGV and Italo EVO trainsets connect Milan, Turin, Venice, Rome, Naples and Salerno with four service classes and prices from €9.90.

Italo, the private challenger of Italian high speed

Italo was founded in 2006 by Luca di Montezemolo, Diego Della Valle, Gianni Punzo and other Italian entrepreneurs under the NTV name. The first commercial departure took place on 28 April 2012. Italo today operates around thirty Alstom AGV (300 km/h) and Bombardier Italo EVO (250 km/h) trainsets on the main Turin-Milan-Florence-Rome-Naples axis, complemented by Venice and Salerno. Italo carried 22 million passengers in 2023 and holds about 35% of the Italian high-speed market.

Four classes and private lounges

Italo offers four classes: Smart (2-2 seat, sockets, Wi-Fi), Comfort (wider 2-2 seat, dedicated welcome), Prima (2-1 by the window, complimentary snack, newspapers), Club Executive (1-2 leather, on-board lounge, hot meal served at the seat, access to the Italo Club Lounges in Turin, Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome Tiburtina, Rome Termini and Naples). All trains offer free Wi-Fi, Italo Live (onboard entertainment), sockets at every seat, equipped toilets and silence areas.

Italo fares: Low Cost, Economy, Flex

Italo offers three main fares: Low Cost (the cheapest, non-exchangeable), Economy (exchange with a fee), Flex (flexible exchange and refund). Rome-Milan tickets in Low Cost Smart start at €19.90 when sales open, €29.90 in Comfort and €59.90 in Club Executive. Sales open about 6 months ahead of the trip.

Is Italo more expensive or cheaper than Trenitalia?

On competing axes (Rome-Milan, Rome-Naples), the two operators run very similar fares. Italo lures with flash Low Cost offers and private lounges, Trenitalia with a denser network (Frecciabianca). Always compare both on Gopaxo.

Which stations does Italo serve in Milan and Rome?

In Milan: Italo stops at Milan Centrale and Milan Porta Garibaldi. In Rome: Roma Termini (main station) and Roma Tiburtina. Some fast trains favour Tiburtina, easier to leave by car.

Does Italo accept pets?

Yes, small animals (under 10 kg) travel free in a closed bag. Larger dogs on a leash and muzzled pay a Reduced Italo fare (about 50% of the adult fare). Assistance dogs travel for free.

Is there a bar car on Italo?

Italo offers vending machines for drinks and snacks in Smart and Comfort, and seat service in Prima and Club Executive. There's no restaurant car like on Frecciarossa.

How do I change my Italo ticket?

Economy and Flex fares can be changed via the Italo website or app. Economy: fixed fee (about €20) + price difference. Flex: free up to 3 minutes before departure. Low Cost: not changeable.
