OBB
ÖBB (Österreichische Bundesbahnen) is Austria's national rail company, famous for its Railjet trains and especially its Nightjet sleeper services. It operates one of Europe's largest night-train networks, with more than 25 destinations from Vienna.
ÖBB Nightjet, the European night-train revival
ÖBB launched its Nightjet brand in late 2016 by taking over night lines abandoned by Deutsche Bahn. Since then, the network has expanded to more than 25 European cities: Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Graz, Linz, Zurich, Basel, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Rome, Venice, Milan, Florence, Brussels, Prague and Warsaw. The busiest lines are Vienna-Zurich, Vienna-Hamburg and Munich-Rome.
The new-generation Nightjet
In 2023, ÖBB began introducing the new-generation Nightjet trainsets built by Siemens. They feature the "Mini Cabin" innovation: a concept of single-occupancy cabins separated by a door, offering privacy close to a private compartment for a price close to a 6-berth couchette. Traditional couchette coaches offer 4- and 6-berth compartments, sleeper coaches 1- to 3-berth cabins with washbasin and sometimes a private shower.
Fares and reservations
Nightjet fares start at €29.90 for a seat, €39.90 in 6-berth couchette, €59 in 4-berth couchette, €89 in Mini Cabin, €119 in Deluxe (private cabin with shower). Reservations open 180 days before travel. Breakfast is included in the sleeper car, optional in couchette (€5.90). All new trainsets offer free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, sockets and a refurbished bathroom.
