FAQ
Luggage, bikes and pets
Hand luggage and hold luggage on trains, transporting bikes and travelling with pets in France and Europe.
How much luggage can I bring?
On SNCF, you can bring 2 large bags (max 70 × 90 × 50 cm) and 1 hand bag per person free of charge. Rules vary by company: Eurostar limits to 2 large bags + 1 hand bag, OUIGO charges a supplement from the second bag onwards. Check the carrier's policy before departure.
How do I travel with my bike on a train?
Dismantled bikes stored in a cover of max 120 × 90 cm are accepted free of charge as luggage on most trains. For non-dismantled bikes, a dedicated slot must be reserved separately (about €10 on TGV INOUI, free on Intercités and TER subject to availability). Some international lines require prior registration.
Can I travel with my dog or cat?
Yes. Small animals (under 6 kg) travel in a transport bag for about €7 on SNCF trains. Dogs over 6 kg, on a leash and muzzled, travel with a ticket of about €7. Rules differ at other carriers (DB, Trenitalia, Renfe, Eurostar): check the partner's pet policy.
Is luggage paid for?
In most cases, no: hand luggage and a defined number of cabin bags are included in the ticket. Surcharges mainly concern OUIGO (second bag, oversized bag), some low-cost trains and non-dismantled bikes. Exact rules are shown by the partner at order.
Is there a weight limit for luggage?
There is no official weight limit on most trains, unlike planes. Dimensions, however, are regulated: each bag must be carried by its owner and fit in the provided storage spaces.
How do I transport a musical instrument?
Small instruments (violin, flute, guitar in case) are considered hand luggage. Bulky instruments (double bass, cello) require buying an extra seat on some companies. Check with the partner before travel.
What if I lose my luggage?
Report the loss as soon as possible to the conductor or the arrival station's reception. You can also declare the loss on the company's website. Keep the declaration number: it'll be requested if your bag is found or for any compensation.
